Riding My Bike is ALWAYS an Adventure

I write about biking a lot here at Fondant is Gross, which probably not what you expect from a blog that has a cake themed name.  Unfortunately, I wasn't feeling all that creative the night I founded this blog, or at least as far as coming up with something related to my name or something I was doing at the time. Now I think that I could call my blog Century, 5K and Jenny makes three or something else bizzare like that.  But I like my blog name and I'd like to think that having passion for what I write about will allow you to forgive me for having a misleading-ish blog title.

Anyway, the reason this post is titled as it is, is for at this moment, I am writing this post, sitting on a rock, under a tree somewhere on Stillman road in the greater Lansing area, hoping I don't get wet while I wait for Adam to come back and get me, because, in spectacular fashion, I have earned yet another flat, this time on the front wheel, instead of the back.

I'll be here awhile since it's going to take Adam at least a half hour to get back to the apartment and then another 10-15 to get back here.  But, the Blogger smartphone app allows me to add pics to this post from my phone, so, here are some lovely photos of my surroundings.

Oh, and not one car has stopped to see if I'm ok. Yeesh.  I did get one honk.











I forgot to mention it's raining also.

What is Strong? Century Training Day 1

As I mentioned previously, Adam and I want to ride a century.  Adam already rode one a few months before we got married, but he wants to do longer training this time, instead of the short training he did before.  He told me the other day that he was 80% spent by the time he made the halfway point and did not want to do that again.

So, we started training today.  What better day to start training than the first rest day of the Tour? It was rather short, only 6 miles at an easy pace, but there was an element of excitement in training this morning.  We awoke to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning and the storm front was bearing down on us quickly. We ate and dressed quickly and headed out.  With what it seems 90% of Lansing under construction we had to zig zag a bit to get to the River Trail, but we rode 3 miles out and 3 back.  We rolled in about 2 seconds before the storm hit, whew!  It was a great ride.  I felt so good after.

And since I had a brand spankin' new cycling computer from Meijer it was great fun to watch how fast we were going and our distance.  I also was able to watch my heart rate closely too, since Adam found my heart rate monitor yesterday in a box (we are still not unpacked!).  That was a kick too.  If only we were able to get a cycling computer like the pros have and I would only have to look at one thing instead of three!

This weekend I also tried the iMapMyRide that they've been pushing for the Aquaphor Challenge against Levi Leipheimer.  It's an interesting app.  There are some things I don't like about it.  For example, I can't get it to stop automatically posting my rides/walks to Facebook without revoking it's publishing rights, but if I do that I can't post the rides/walks myself when there are ones I want to post.  Kind of annoying.  And when I try and log in on the website, I can't because I never got a password, I only have a username and they didn't ask for a email when I signed up, so I can't have them send me a password.  ARGH!

Other than that though, it's a pretty app!

Great ride, fun stuff to play with and I can't wait for the actual century!

Whew! What. A. Weekend.

So as I posted on Friday, I had a very busy couple days!

Friday had several things go down that I will emulate in later posts, but for now, the weekend.

Friday afternoon, my brothers, Matt and Zack, and my friends Melissa, Courtney and her sister Jess descended on our apartment to help us pack up and move to East Lansing, which we have now done.

After complications in renting the truck because our credit card number was stolen, we started the long process of packing.  We got a 16 foot truck and there was some concern of whether or not all of our crap that we have accumulated would fit.  We have a lot of crap.

We had originally planned to leave out our bed, and the futons til last so our movers would have a place to sleep.  But, once we assessed the size of the truck, we decided that we couldn't wait to put those in.  So, we all slept on the floor.

Thanks to my neurosis, I had to stop carrying things to the truck and stay inside and pack more.  I would look around the apartment and then look at the truck and then look around the apartment and then look at the truck and start to wig out because I didn't think it would all fit.

Then super-packer Zack took over in the truck and he kicked some serious ass and it fit.  I don't know how he did it, but he did, THANK GOODNESS!!

We are still driving back up to Mount Pleasant today to finish cleaning the apartment, vacuum, clean the bathroom, etc.  And to get our bikes.  Since we had such lovely weather on Saturday (read: awful, cold and rainy) we left the bikes so they wouldn't get wet, so we have to get those too.

It was the most fun I've had moving though.  After we finished loading most of the apartment Friday night we went to Doozie's for ice cream and played X-BOX.

Saturday we finished loading in the rain, and drove to chilly EL to unload quickly and return the truck.  The truck leaked and soaked our mattress, which kind of sucks, but we turned fans on it immediately and it dried pretty quickly.  My brothers stayed with us Saturday so we played Nazi Zombies, they played NHL 2K10 and just hung out which was really nice, Adam and I hadn't hung out with Matt for longer than a couple hours in a long time, it was nice.

My parents came by Sunday to pick up the boys and head home and we had lunch at the Harrison Roadhouse (Roadhouse!) and then Adam and I went to an indoor BBQ for some of his colleagues who just graduated with their PhDs for dinner.

Busy weekend, lots of fun.  And a lot of stuff.  We are going to unpack with garbage and donation bags in hand.  This picture is just the closet in the second bedroom - Egads!

And now: job search.

When It Rains It Pours....

As those of you who live in the area know very well, it rained like hell yesterday.

Our parking lot has one storm drain. Right there. In the middle. In that little part that is flat. Can you see it? (Yeah, I can't see it either.)

It's fall (ground breaking observation - LOOK OUT!) and so this drain gets clogged, and this happens...

The poor bastard who is parked weird soaked their engine trying to drive through the middle. Not the best choice....

Always watch oatmeal when it is in the microwave - it blows up - true story.

Check your e-mail before you get to campus, class might be canceled. You think I would have learned by now.

Honey makes oatmeal better - yum.

I want it to snow really bad, but all we get is wind and rain.

But I like thunderstorms.

Oatmeal is hard to eat fast.

Theatre classes are harder than you think.

Today is Day 16 so I'm doing Cardio X this afternoon.

GLEE IS BACK TONIGHT! OMG! OMG! OMG! (Sorry, had to get that out of my system...)

I have to perform a Shakespeare monologue on Thursday and I can't get the last 4 lines in my brain to stay.

I have a scene in 10 minutes, wish me luck!!
